Girl Scouts learn woodworking skills at annual Build Like a Girl workshop

DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – Girl Scouts spent Saturday learning hands-on construction skills during the sixth annual Build Like a Girl workshop at the Bush Construction warehouse in Davenport.

Bush Construction partnered with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois for the event. Participants built birdhouses from scratch using mostly hand tools.

“Today has been so much fun. I think my favorite part was nailing the nails onto the birdhouse,” said Amelia W., a Girl Scout who attended the workshop.

Skills, mentorship, and career exploration

Girls learned how to read blueprints and use tools, including tape measures, saws, and hammers.

Each participant was paired with a member of the Bush Construction team, who guided them through each step of the project while teaching basic building skills.

“The girls said that they’re having a lot more fun than they thought they were going to and then also that they’re learning new skills and just helping them be more confident using tools,” said Stephanie Hintermeister, project coordinator at Bush Construction.

The workshop was held during Women in Construction Week. Girls also had the opportunity to explore possible careers in the construction industry while working toward their woodworking badge.
