PPI: Material Prices Continue to Rise

The latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing mostly increasing across the board, not only from January to February 2026, but on a year-over-year basis.

In February, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category inched up by 0.3% from the previous month, climbing 4.5% compared to the previous year. At the same time, softwood lumber prices decreased by 0.3% from January to February, dropping a full 1.7% from February 2025. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification continued an upward trend with a 1% jump from January, and a 6.5% increase on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows increased by 1.6% over January, clocking a 20.3% rise over the February 2025 report. Prices for metal doors and frames also increased, though not by nearly enough, with only a 0.1% bump from January to February, while improving by 11.0% over last year. Prices for wood windows flat lined from the previous month but did record a 2.8% increase on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications showed no change from January, but a 0.6% increase over February 2025 pricing.

The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials split the ticket, up 1.5% over January, while dropping 6.4% from February of last year. Prices for fiberglass plastic products rose by 0.3% from the previous month, notching a 4.6% increase over the previous February.
The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, inched up by 0.2% from January to February, rising by 8.2% from February 2025.
